A number of my colleagues have informed me that Dubai is changing at a remarkable rate, with development and redevelopment happening at an extraordinary rate. So I thought I'd take a look on Google Earth and see if our "old" house was still there!
And it is! Seems the area here hasn't changed too much other than a few new skyscrapers. However, if you pan out, what you certainly notice is Palm Island... and this is the "small" one... there's a bigger one being built down the coast.
What I find fastinating about Google Earth is that I can't see my parents house in any detail (which is in the UK and has been there for 25 years or so in a village that it a couple of centuries old), but Bushehr in Iran (where I used to fly to on my way to the rig in the Persian Gulf) is shown in very high detail... wonder if that's anything to do with there being a military base and nuclear power station there? These are American satallite pictures after all!
Anyway, if you've got time to waste then Google Earth is great for flying around the world and looking in your neighbour's garden!
